The narrative is woven together through a series of interviews with the women over a six-year period, using the lyrics of songs that capture the mood and issues of each period referenced: Billie Holliday’s "Strange Fruit," "I Am Not My Hair" by India.Arie, "Golden" by Jill Scott, "Society’s Child" by Janis Ian, and many others.
